Sonia Daccarett discusses The Roots of the Guava Tree, identity, family history, religion, and growing up between cultures in Colombia during the turbulent 1980s.

Hello My Happy People,
Today I am joined by author Sonia Daccarett for episode 223 of Book Banter with Dianne Burckhardt–Book Talk Podcast. We discussed her memoir The Roots of the Guava Tree, a deeply personal story about growing up between cultures, religions, and borders while searching for where she truly belonged.
We talked about what it was like for her growing up between Jewish and Palestinian family histories in Colombia during the turbulent 1980s. It was challenging for Sonia to navigate personal identity struggles while living through a dangerous and uncertain historical period in Colombia marked by cartel violence and kidnappings. Memoirs like Sonia's show how family stories can help preserve important moments in history from a very human perspective.
We also delved into Sonia's professional career and what it was like moving from professional communications to creative writing and the emotional experience of turning personal memories into her debut memoir.
During the Five Quick Questions segment, we got a bit more personal with Sonia sharing her love of San Francisco, some of her strongest childhood memories from Colombia, and her pride in the family she and her husband have built together. But don't just read about it all here, go listen now to learn more about this fascinating author from the woman herself.
Enjoy,
Dianne
