Dr. Samantha Bigby Voss has built her career on evidence. ​Her mother, renowned physicist Dr. Lydia Bigby, introduces her to television producer Ava Moreno, who is searching for a scientist to become the resident scientific expert on the paranormal investigation series S.P.E.C.T.R. Founded by a team of former Navy comrades, the show's investigators have built their reputations searching for evidence of the unexplained.
Before making her decision, Sam travels to the Next Level Production Collective offices in Burbank to meet the team. S.P.E.C.T.R.'s team leader and former Navy medic, Clay Barnes, immediately puts her at ease, and the attraction between them is impossible to ignore. Logistics specialist Matthew "Matt" Volks challenges nearly everything Sam says, creating instant friction from the moment they meet.

​Meanwhile, tech specialist Jack "Jax" Marx and production assistant Steven Carter seem perfectly content to stand back and enjoy the fireworks. Still convinced she doesn't belong on a paranormal investigation show, Sam reluctantly agrees, at her family's urging, to join the team for a single trial investigation at the legendary Langston Watch Hotel in Willow Creek, Kansas before deciding whether to accept Ava's offer permanently.

Expecting to expose faulty equipment, bad science, and another supposed ghost story, Sam heads to Willow Creek convinced she'll return home with every mystery explained. Instead, she finds herself confronting events that refuse to fit within the laws of physics. Stranger still, whatever is haunting the Langston Watch Hotel appears to be focused on her for reasons no one can explain.
One trial investigation was supposed to help Sam decide if she wanted to take a chance on a new career. Instead, it may lead her to a future she never saw coming, in her career or in her love life.

Joining a paranormal investigation team was never part of Sam's career plan. She agreed to one trial investigation at the Langston Watch Hotel before deciding whether to sign on as S.P.E.C.T.R.'s resident scientist. It seemed like a harmless way to fill the time while her future remained uncertain.

Meeting the team only complicates matters. Leading the S.P.E.C.T.R. team, Clay Barnes is kind, steady, incredibly attractive, and immediately puts her at ease. Being around him feels comfortable in a way she hasn't experienced since before her last relationship. Matt Volks is another story entirely. While equally attractive and intelligent, he has an uncanny ability to challenge nearly everything she says. Every conversation leaves Sam equal parts irritated and intrigued, and she's not entirely sure which feeling bothers her more.

One investigation was supposed to help her decide whether she wanted a place on the S.P.E.C.T.R. team. She never expected it to leave her questioning her career, her beliefs... or her heart.

None of it is true, but perception has a way of becoming reality. What respectable woman would want to build a future with a man the world believes can't commit? If only Matt could stop picking fights with Sam long enough for her to realize she already belongs on the team... even if Clay has convinced himself she could never belong with him.
