Hello My Happy People,
There are some interviews you know are going to be special before you ever hit the record button. This was definitely one of those.
The first thing that caught my attention about Liz Bullard wasn't one of her books. It was her smile. Looking through her website, social media, and publicity photos, she has one of the most genuine smiles I've seen in a long time. It immediately made me think she was someone I would truly enjoy sitting down with over a cup of coffee and talking about books.
She did not disappoint!
Our conversation felt incredibly natural from beginning to end. Those are my favorite interviews because they feel less like work and more like spending time with a friend talking about books. There weren't awkward pauses or forced moments, and when it came time to edit today's episode, there was very little that actually needed editing.
One of the topics that really resonated with me was our discussion about mental health and representation in fiction. We talked about how important it is for readers to see characters asking the same difficult questions they may be asking themselves. Sometimes simply knowing you're not alone can make all the difference.
Of course, I also loved talking about the paranormal side of Liz's Lira Somers Mysteries and its first book Sleeping Beauty. Is it intuition? Is it something psychological? Or could there really be something more? Those are the kinds of conversations I never get tired of having. Part of me has always wanted to believe there's still a little magic left in the world, something beyond what we can easily explain.
Another part of our conversation that I really enjoyed was hearing how Liz's work as a therapist influences both her writing and her podcast. She shared how being a podcast host has made her a better therapist by teaching her to ask better questions and really listen to people's answers. I thought that was such an interesting perspective, and honestly, it made perfect sense.
One of the best surprises came at the end of today's episode when Liz invited me to join her for an Instagram Live on July 4 (9 am U.S. Central Time/4 pm European Central Time).
