Hello My Happy People,

Every once in a while, I have a conversation with an author that reminds me exactly why I started Book Banter in the first place. My interview with Daniel Grace was one of those conversations.

I had so much fun talking with Daniel, and not simply because he has led such a remarkable life. How many people can say they've worked on Super Bowl commercials, owned an advertising agency, produced wine in Tuscany, and written a literary thriller? Each of those experiences could easily fill an interview on its own, but what fascinated me most was the story behind his novel, In the Wake of Golgotha.

I studied comparative religious studies in college, and I've always been fascinated by the ways religious beliefs, historical events, and cultural traditions influence how we understand the world. So when Daniel began discussing his modern reimagining of Judas Iscariot and Pontius Pilate, I was immediately intrigued.

These are two figures whose names have been familiar to many of us for most of our lives. We know their roles in biblical history, or at least the versions of those stories we've been taught. But how often do we stop to consider them as actual people, with complicated emotions, motivations, fears, and personal conflicts?

That's one of the things I love about amodern reimagining of historical figures. They take people we often think of as characters in a story and give us an opportunity to see them through a more human lens.

Daniel's approach is particularly imaginative because he isn't simply retelling familiar events. He's asking us to consider these figures in an entirely different context, bringing their struggles into a modern world where questions of morality, responsibility, and personal choice remain just as relevant.

One of the most thought-provoking parts of our conversation was Daniel's exploration of the relationship between religion and the modern justice system.

Now, this is where my academic background made the conversation even more engaging for me. In addition to studying comparative religion, I also have a degree in forensic criminology. So when Daniel began discussing the historical connections between religious traditions, punishment, and legal institutions, I found myself considering his ideas from both perspectives.

We tend to discuss religion, law, and criminal justice as separate subjects, but history shows us how closely these institutions have been connected. Daniel's observations raised questions about the ways those connections continue to influence our modern understanding of justice, punishment, and morality.

And isn't that what great literature is supposed to do?

I don't believe a book has to give us all the answers. In fact, sometimes the most memorable books are the ones that leave us with more questions than we had when we started. They encourage us to reconsider something we've always accepted, examine an issue from an unfamiliar perspective, or simply entertain a possibility we might never have thought about on our own.

Daniel told me during our interview that he wants In the Wake of Golgotha to be an uncomfortable read. I find that intreguing. Not because I particularly enjoy being uncomfortable, but because I understand what he's trying to accomplish. Sometimes the most worthwhile conversations are the ones that challenge our assumptions. And those are exactly the kinds of conversations I enjoy having.

Of course, we couldn't spend our entire conversation discussing religion, history, and criminal justice. Daniel also has another fascinating career as a winemaker in Tuscany!

My husband and I love wine, and we've made several wine-buying trips to Italy over the years. Living relatively close to Italy has certainly made those adventures easier, and exploring different vineyards and discovering new wines is something we both enjoy.

Naturally, I was excited to hear about Daniel's winery, il Molino di Grace, and the wines he produces there.

In fact, after our conversation, my husband and I started looking through the winery's offerings. We've already spotted several wines that look particularly appealing, and we're hoping to place an order soon. I'm really looking forward to trying them!

I also enjoyed hearing Daniel discuss the connections between his different careers. At first glance, advertising, winemaking, and writing novels might seem to have very little in common. But as we talked, the importance of storytelling became a recurring theme.

Whether you're developing an advertising campaign, sharing the history and character of a vineyard, or creating a fictional world, you're finding ways to connect with people. And Daniel has certainly had plenty of opportunities to explore those connections throughout his career.

As I was reflecting on this interview, I realized something about why conversations like this are so important to me. Producing Book Banter takes an enormous amount of time and effort. It also costs me money, and every hour I spend preparing interviews, recording episodes, editing audio, or promoting the podcast is an hour I'm not spending on my own writing. And yet, I keep doing it.

Why?

Because conversations like the one I had with Daniel Grace are a form of mental enrichment that I simply cannot replace. They keep me engaged, curious, and fascinated by the world around me. They introduce me to ideas I might never have encountered otherwise, encourage me to question things I've taken for granted, and give me opportunities to explore subjects I genuinely love.

There's something wonderful about sitting down with another person who is passionate about an idea and getting to explore that passion together. Sometimes I learn something new. Sometimes I discover a different way of looking at something I thought I understood. And sometimes I walk away with so many questions that I find myself thinking about the conversation long after we've finished recording. To me, that's invaluable.

We all need opportunities for mental enrichment, whether they come from reading a book, exploring a new place, learning a skill, or having a fascinating conversation. For me, interviewing authors like Daniel is one of the most rewarding ways to find that enrichment.

It's what feeds my curiosity, engages my imagination, and reminds me that there's always something new to discover.

Enjoy,

Dianne
