One of the things I love about interviewing authors is discovering the completely different paths people take before they eventually become writers. Lucy Ashe is a perfect example. Before becoming an author, Lucy was a professional dancer and later became a teacher. Those experiences eventually became part of the journey that led her to writing historical fiction.
I found Lucy incredibly interesting to talk to because she was willing to share so much about herself and the experiences that influenced her writing. It is one thing to read an author's biography before an interview. It is another thing entirely to hear that person explain how seemingly unrelated pieces of their life eventually came together and influenced the stories they wanted to tell.
Our main focus was Lucy's historical psychological thriller, The Model Patient, set in London in the early 1960s. The story explores the relationship between a young model and her psychoanalyst and raises unsettling questions about trust, manipulation, power, and what can happen when someone in a position of authority begins crossing boundaries.
That premise alone gives you a lot to think about. When someone seeks professional help, there is an inherent level of trust involved. But what happens when that trust may be manipulated? How easily can someone recognize what is happening when the person influencing them is also the person they believe is helping them? Those questions make the psychological elements of The Model Patient particularly intriguing.
Lucy and I also talked about the historical setting and the research involved in creating the world of the novel. Setting a psychological thriller in the early 1960s changes the circumstances surrounding the characters considerably. Attitudes toward mental health, psychoanalysis, women, professional authority, and acceptable behavior were not necessarily the same as they are today. That historical context becomes an important part of understanding the characters and their choices.
What I particularly enjoyed about this interview was getting to know more about Lucy herself. Her path from professional dance to teaching and eventually writing is certainly not the typical route people imagine when they think about becoming an author. But that is exactly why I enjoy these conversations so much. There really isn't one correct path to becoming a writer.
And, as usual, our conversation wandered into places beyond the questions I originally planned. Those are often some of my favorite moments because they allow you to see more of the person behind the book rather than simply hearing another description of the novel.
By the time we finished talking, Lucy had definitely made me curious to read The Model Patient. I want to know exactly what is happening between these characters and how much of what the young woman experiences she can actually trust. A story that leaves me asking questions before I've even opened the book has already accomplished something.
